The Sunbeam Project Agreement.
For work built under the Sunbeam name, on Sunbeam infrastructure. You keep your copyright, the source is public, and you can fork it if you leave.
01 What this covers
This agreement applies to a Sunbeam project: work started or continued under the Sunbeam name, in a Sunbeam repository, or running on infrastructure Sunbeam pays for.
It does not apply to work you brought with you or made on your own kit. That’s covered by Published via Sunbeam, and it stays entirely yours.
Which one applies gets decided in writing before work starts — an email or a message is writing. If it was never decided, it isn’t a Sunbeam project.
02 Who owns it
You keep copyright in everything you write, draw, shoot, or record. Nothing in this agreement assigns or transfers ownership to Sunbeam.
By contributing, you licence your contribution to the project and to everyone else under the project’s licence — Apache License 2.0 for code, CC BY 4.0 for writing, design, photography, and film, unless the project’s own LICENSE file says otherwise on the day you contribute.
A project cannot be moved to a closed or non-commercial licence later. Relicensing needs the written agreement of every credited contributor.
You confirm the work is yours to give: not owned by an employer, not copied from somewhere you didn’t have permission to copy from.
03 What Sunbeam provides
At Sunbeam’s cost:
- Hosting, domains, and deployment
- Identity and sign-in through Passport and OS
- Repositories, CI, and build minutes
- Service credits and licences where we have them
- A listing in the work on this site
- Review, introductions, and help from people who’ve done it before
Provided as-is. Sunbeam gives no uptime guarantee and is not liable for downtime, data loss, or anything a paid provider would owe you. Keep your own backups.
If Sunbeam needs to withdraw infrastructure, you get 30 days’ notice and a full export — source, data, domain transfer, and anything else needed to run it elsewhere.
04 The name and the mark
While it’s a Sunbeam project, it may be named under Sunbeam and carry the Sunbeam mark. Sunbeam owns the mark and that doesn’t change.
Sunbeam holds the project domain, repository, and org accounts as custodian. Custody is not ownership of the work.
If a project stops being a Sunbeam project, the name and mark come off, the code stays open, and the project can continue under a new name.
05 Credit
Everyone who worked on it is credited, in the repository and wherever the project is presented. That credit is permanent.
Leaving, or falling out with anyone, does not remove your name.
06 Money
Contribution is voluntary and unpaid by default. No wage, fee, or expenses are owed by either side.
If a project earns money — a customer, a grant, a sponsorship, a sale — the split is agreed in a written addendum, signed by every credited contributor, before any of it is spent or distributed.
In that addendum, Sunbeam's claim is limited to recovering direct costs it paid — servers, licences, domains — unless the contributors agree otherwise in writing.
Anyone can sell services around the project, take paid work from it, or build a business on it. The licence permits this, and doing so creates no obligation to the other contributors or to Sunbeam.
07 Confidentiality
Rates, unreleased work, private introductions, and anything told to you in confidence stay confidential. That obligation outlives this agreement.
Public source, public issues, public history. If a decision affects the project, it gets made where contributors can read it.
08 Leaving
Either side can end this at any time, for any reason, with a message. No notice period, no penalty.
Ending it does not withdraw the licence on work already contributed — that can’t be taken back, by you or by Sunbeam.
You can fork the project and continue it elsewhere — new name, same credits, full history.
Sunbeam can remove a project or a person immediately for harassment, plagiarism, deceiving people, or putting others at risk. Clauses 2, 5, 7, and 8.2 survive regardless.
09 General
This is not employment, partnership, agency, or a joint venture. Nobody can sign for anyone else or make promises in another’s name.
This agreement is not exclusive. You are free to work for anyone else at the same time.
Everything is provided without warranty. Each side’s liability is limited to the amounts it has actually paid the other under this agreement.
South African law. A disagreement starts as a conversation, then mediation, then the courts if it comes to that.
Where a clause reads two ways, the reading that favours the maker wins. If this document is updated, the version you agreed to keeps applying to work already done.
Signing it.
Reply to the invitation with the project name and “Sunbeam project, v1.0”. That counts as the signature. A copy goes in the repository as AGREEMENT.md so it’s readable by anyone who shows up later.
